Eye Infections (conjunctivitis) There are two common types of eye infections, bacterial (ex. staphylococcus) and viral (ex. herpes), and almost all are contagious. Bacterial conjunctivitis is effectively treated with antibiotics and some types of viral infections are treated with anti-viral drugs. Although most eye infections are self limiting, it is very important to seek treatment to prevent exposure to others. Pink eye is a layman's term for viral conjunctivitis.
Cataracts (A clouding of the lens inside the eye) If everyone lived long enough, all, eventually would get cataracts. Age related cataracts are by far the most common, other causes include traumatic cataracts and disease related (diabetic). When cataracts are bad enough to obscure vision, they are removed and replaces by clear plastic implants.
Glaucoma (elevated eye pressure) After diabetes, Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness. Although glaucoma isn't curable it is treatable. Modern drugs are very effective in keeping the eye pressure to an acceptable level. One very important thing to remember is that glaucoma shows little or now symptoms. Annual comprehensive eye exams are essential to detect this "silent thief of vision".
Allergy One of the most common ailments that people suffer from are allergens and their effects on the eye. Whether they are seasonal or environmental, they often cause red, itchy, teary eyes. Fortunately, we have very effective eye medications that will reduce or eliminate these symptoms.
Macular Degeneration The number one cause of irreversible loss of vision in people over 70 years of age. Although there is a strong hereditary component, other strong factors include smoking and exposure to the sun's ultra violet rays. There is no cure but there are some measures that can reduce the odds of it happening to you. Quit smoking, wear quality sunglasses and take eye supplements.
